What is a super top-up, and should you buy one?
How to get ₹25 lakh of health cover for a fraction of what a ₹25 lakh policy costs, and the catch you need to understand first.
Most families want high health cover and flinch at the premium. A super top-up is the standard way out of that trade-off, and it's dramatically cheaper than buying one large policy. It's also widely misunderstood, so let's fix that.
The idea in one line
A super top-up sits on top of a smaller base policy and starts paying once your yearly medical bills cross an agreed threshold, called the deductible. You might hold a ₹5 lakh base plan plus a ₹20 lakh super top-up with a ₹5 lakh deductible. Small bills are handled by the base plan; a serious hospitalisation unlocks the top-up.
Why it's so much cheaper
The insurer knows it will only ever pay on the rare, expensive claims, the routine ones are absorbed below the deductible. Less exposure means a much lower premium. That's why a base-plus-top-up structure often costs a fraction of a single large policy for a similar total cover.
Top-up vs super top-up, the difference that matters
- A plain top-up applies the deductible to each individual claim. Three ₹3 lakh claims against a ₹5 lakh deductible? None of them qualify.
- A super top-up adds up all your claims across the policy year. Those same three claims total ₹9 lakh, clear the ₹5 lakh deductible, and the cover kicks in.
- For almost everyone, the super top-up is the one worth buying. The word 'super' is doing a lot of work here.
The catch
You must genuinely be able to cover the deductible. If your base plan is exhausted or you don't have one, that gap comes out of your pocket before the top-up pays a rupee. The structure only works if the base cover and the deductible line up, which is exactly where people get it wrong on their own.
Who it suits
It works especially well if you already have employer cover you can treat as your base layer, or if you want high protection in a metro without a metro-sized premium. It's less suitable if you have no base cover at all and couldn't absorb the deductible in a bad year.
Get the deductible right and a super top-up is one of the best-value products in Indian health insurance. Get it wrong and it's a policy that never pays. We're happy to do that maths with you.
