Why insurance claims get rejected, and how to avoid it

Rejections are rarely random. Here are the real reasons claims fail, and what you can do at buying time to keep yours safe.

The fear that a claim will be rejected keeps plenty of people from buying insurance at all. But rejections aren't arbitrary, they cluster around a handful of causes, and nearly all of them are set in motion the day you buy, not the day you claim.

1. Non-disclosure, by far the biggest

Not declaring a health condition, your smoking, your real income, or a risky occupation is the leading reason genuine claims fail. Insurers investigate, and medical records and nicotine tests tell the truth. The premium you save by staying quiet is trivial next to the cover your family loses.

2. Claiming inside a waiting period

The claim isn't wrong, the timing is. Pre-existing conditions, specific illnesses and maternity all carry waits. Know yours before you claim, and don't assume day-one cover for everything.

3. Something the policy simply excludes

Every policy lists what it won't pay for. Cosmetic procedures, certain consumables, some adventure activities. This isn't the insurer being difficult; it's a term you agreed to. Reading the exclusions once, when you buy, prevents the shock later.

4. Missing or late paperwork

  • Intimate the claim promptly, ideally within 24 to 48 hours of hospitalisation.
  • Keep every bill, prescription, report and the discharge summary, as you go.
  • Submit a complete file the first time; piecemeal submissions are what stretch a claim out for months.

5. A lapsed policy

The saddest rejection of all: cover that ended because a renewal was missed. No premium means no policy. Set a reminder, or let us track your renewals so it can't happen.

What actually protects you

Declare everything honestly, buy from an insurer with a strong settlement record, understand your waiting periods, and never let the policy lapse. Do those four things and you've eliminated most of the risk. And if a claim is ever wrongly rejected, don't accept it quietly, we help our customers contest those.
